About Me (optional)

This is who I am…

You see, I’m a busy, working single mother (say hello to the Chronicle’s Elyria city government reporter) who does all the heavy lifting in our household when it comes to my daughter and 4-year-old son. Lunches and lunch money fall on me. Everything to do with clothes – picking out, washing, buying and finding under the bed – is also my job. Not to mention the many times during the day I instantaneously transform into a personal chef, tutor, chauffeur, housekeeper, personal shopper, financial planner, plumber, monster slayer or trusty steed for piggyback rides around the house.

To say I’m exhausted would be an understatement. Every time I think I have successfully crossed the threshold into good mom territory, something – usually my 4-year-old and his potty mouth learned right from my slips— slaps me back into the realm of simply average.

I spaz out, say something I later regret and wonder if I’m going to make it the next 16 years on my own.

Here are just a few of the things I deal with on a daily basis: Telling my not-yet-a-teen daughter she can’t have a cell phone. Reminding my stubborn preschooler that pants are a good thing. And, convincing both that I don’t run a restaurant and my refrigerator is not there for constant foraging.

Everyday is a new test to which I only wonder if I’m doing the right thing.

ELYRIA - Local youths are still experimenting with alcohol and drugs at high rates and believe those risky behaviors will not stop them from excelling in life, according to the results of a countywide survey.

ELYRIA — If they can raise $15,000, they will get $15,000.

Just as the leaders of the Elyria Salvation Army were working on a plan to deal with a $38,000 funding shortfall, a longtime anonymous donor presented them with a challenge. If it could rally the community to donate $15,000, he would match that with another [...]

ELYRIA — City Auditor Ted Pileski is a little more generous than people think.

On Dec. 30, 2009, just two days before a 2.5 percent pay increase went into effect, Pileski wrote a check to the city for $3,255.77 to cover the bump in pay. It was the second such payment Pileski made in the year [...]

  • Lisa Roberson wrote a new post: Mother and daughter find gold while shopping   1 week, 3 days ago

    It started with her birthday.
Two $50 gift cards from her favorite store, Justice for Girls, were found tucked inside two birthday cards.
She nearly jumped for joy and her eyes glazed over at the thought of buying her own clothes. Not the clothes I pick out and pay for, but ones she can decide on all [...]

  • Lisa Roberson wrote a new post: Elyria’s top brass receives raises   1 week, 3 days ago

ELYRIA — In a year where city officials will likely ask residents to approve an income tax increase, the city’s top three elected officials are enjoying a bump in their pay — an increase City Council voted to give them in 2007.

Effective Jan. 1, Mayor Bill Grace, the second-highest salaried city employee in 2009, saw [...]
