Smiles for Sophie Forever festival
The third annual Smiles for Sophie Forever Fall Family Festival will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 3 at Holy Spirit Church in Avon Lake.
Admission is $10 for children ages 3 to 12, or $25 for a family pass that admits up to six children and includes a free SFSF tote bag. Admission covers all activities including pony rides, bounce houses, crafts, face painting, hay climb and mini ballet clinics. There will also be special free performances by magician Rick Smith Jr. at noon and G-Force Band at 1 p.m. Food, baked goods, specialty gift items and raffle tickets will be available for purchase.
Proceeds support the Smiles for Sophie Forever Foundation, which was formed in memory of an Avon Lake child, Sophie Quayle, who died of brain cancer. The foundation battles pediatric brain cancer by raising awareness, funding research grants, and aiding families of children suffering from brain cancer. Garden club to meet Oct. 7
Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club will meet at noon Oct. 7 in the Avon Lake Public Library’s Gallery.
Club member Jo’C Walker will present “Seeds of Hope Growing in Uganda” about her recent trip to the African nation. She will present a program complete with slides and anecdotes of how the garden club’s “Seeds of Hope” project is being used in three schools in Uganda.
Recently at the Garden Club of Ohio Inc.’s fall district meeting, Avon-on-the Lake Garden Club received awards from the National Garden Clubs for the work they had done in the past year. The club received the Flower Show Achievement Award for the November 2008 Flower Show, National Certificates for Horticulture Therapy, Publicity Press Book for Central Atlantic Region and was the overall winner for World Gardening for the “Seeds of Hope” project.
Avon-on-the-Lake Garden Club will have a booth at homecoming Oct. 10 and 11 where the group will be selling plants and bulbs.
