Greek festival

St. Nicholas Church is holding its annual Greek Festival through Sunday at the church, 2000 Tower Blvd., Lorain.

The hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. today and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Attendance in years past has exceeded 6,000 people from all over Ohio who come to feast on Greek cuisine and pastries. Bouzouki music and Hellenic line dancers will provide entertainment.

Food, a gyro drive-thru, a Greek boutique, worry bead cafe, folk dancing, kids’ activity area and a silent auction round out the festivities.

Golf benefit

The 11th annual benefit golf outing for A Special Wish Foundation of Northeast Ohio is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today at Mallard Creek in Columbia Station.

The four-man scramble will tee off between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. using tees 19 and 28.

Cost of the golf outing is $70 per person. Hole sponsors are $50 and a steak dinner is $20. Golf participants get 18 holes of golf, an electric cart, lunch and dinner plus refreshments on the course.

Car show

A Festival of Cars show is 1 to 4 p.m. today (rain date Sunday) at the Lake Pointe Health Center, 3364 Kolbe Road, Lorain. Proceeds will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

Rib burnoff

Greater St. Matthew’s AME Church is holding its a rib burnoff 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 19 at the church, 1909 W. 24th St., Lorain.

Booths are still available for this family affair. There is a 25 percent discount on booths if you bring or provide entertainment such as a choir, dancers, fashion show, etc. Booth space is still available for the rib competition, food/merchandise and informational handouts.

There will be first- and second-place awards given for the best ribs.

Badge lab

The Lorain County Red Cross Chapter and local Boy Scout leaders will host an annual Readyman Badge Lab 9 a.m. until noon Sept. 19 at the Red Cross, 2929 West River Road N., Elyria.

Webelo Scouts will complete the requirements for the Readyman pin. The cost is $7 per Scout and adult leader, which includes the pin and a hot dog lunch.

Holy Trinity Church will hold a breakfast/brunch fundraiser 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept 20 at Trinity Center, 25th Street and Elyria Avenue, Lorain.

The menu includes scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, waffles, French toast, Danish and orange juice, coffee or tea.

The cost is $7 for adults, $3 for children ages 3 to 8. Tickets are available at the door.

Spa evening

Enjoy an evening of pampering at Belleza Salon and Spa Sept. 21 when Easter Seals Northern Ohio presents “Renew You.”

Attendees will enjoy salon services including upper body chair massages, express facial, makeup application with a lesson, and a buff and polish manicure. Finger foods, a signature cocktail, a raffle and a fashion show courtesy of Fashion Bug will round out the evening.

Reservations are $50 and 10 reservations will be taken for one of three time slots – 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Easter Seals programs including home care and speech-language therapy.

Clam bake

Century Council of Community Health Partners is sponsoring a clam bake 5 to 9 p.m. Sept. 26 at St. Peter’s Pavilion, 3501 Oberlin Ave., Lorain.

Entertainment will be provided. Attendees can look forward to side-board raffles, Chinese basket raffles and a special wine basket raffle.

A donation of $27.50 will cover the cost, and proceeds will benefit women’s and children’s projects in the community.

Health program

The next program of the Living Well Series, “Prelude to Pink,” is scheduled for Sept. 26. The series of programs geared toward women’s health and well-being are 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Community Regional Medical Center in Ross Conference rooms 1 and 2.

Tickets are $15 and attendees will be treated to a lunch and an education program.

Proceeds from the Living Well Series benefit the Women’s Fund Endowment that is used to award grants to projects that serve women and girls in Lorain County.

Farmer’s market

The Black River Landing Farmers Market is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays (rain or shine) inside the brick Transportation Center.

Products sold at the market, which are grown, raised or processed in Ohio, include fresh produce, baked goods, homemade dog treats and candies.

VFW poker run

The VFW Post 8686 Poker Run is open to all vehicles today at the VFW, 577 Harris Road, Sheffield Lake. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the run begins at 12:30 p.m. Cost is $15 per driver and each rider is an additional $10, which includes food. The event ends at 4 p.m.

Entertainment, door prizes, a car show, a 50/50 raffle and a reverse raffle are included. Money raised will be used for Post 8686’s charities.

Library happenings

n The Domonkas branch of the Lorain Public Library System will hold a book sale 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. There will be a preview sale 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday for The Friends of the Domonkas Library only. New members may join the night of the preview sale, and former members may renew their annual membership that evening.

Easter Seals Northern Ohio is looking for Lorain County pizzerias that are interested in being a part of the “A Slice of Heaven” pizza bakeoff sponsored by UAW Local 2000.

The bakeoff is scheduled for Oct. 13 and attendees will vote for the winner of Best Pizza in Lorain County.

All proceeds benefit the services and programs provided by Easter Seals that allow local children and adults with disabilities and other special needs the opportunity to live, work, learn and play in our community.
